Automated System for Lavatory Disinfection

In lieu of conventional methods of chemical (sanitizer spray) disinfection, a paper posted at https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1757-899X/1012/1/012049/pdf introduces a novel idea to fight the attack of microbes causing infections and diseasesfrom the source like lavatory and specially its seat. Here we utilize the germicidal power of ultra violet light ray’s .i.e. Ultra Violet C range of the light spectrum against the viruses(SARS-CoV-2), bacteria (E. coli) and other microbes. This system of disinfection constitutes the UV LEDs placed on the arm above the toilet seat. The range of wavelength is from 200nm to 280nm. Implementation of this technique ensures safety, by human…

Autoclaving System Using Ultraviolet Light

The European Journal of Molecular & Clinical Medicine published an academic paper examining UV autoclaving. Hospitals are considered to be the hub for all the micro-organisms as all the infected people are treated there. The risk of healthy people acquiring infections and diseases are also very high. Hence, the process of cleaning and sanitizing all the possible things such as syringes, surgical tools and instruments are highly necessary. The sanitizing process includes both physical and chemical ways by utilizing temperature and/or pressure and must be cautiously tested before it is put into use in healthcare settings. This process is…

A Review of Recent Evidence for Utilizing Ultraviolet Irradiation Technology to Disinfect Both Indoor Air and Surfaces

Farhad Memarzadeh at the National Institutes of Health published a paper in Applied Biosafety reviewing the implementation of “no-touch” technologies such as ultraviolet (UV)-based sanitizers to effectively disinfect the air and high-touch surfaces may be important to keeping working environments and indoor public gathering places, where there may be a higher risk of infection from specific agents, safe for all occupants, particularly with the emergence of highly communicable diseases. UV technologies have been used for many years and are being revisited as one of disinfecting technology to address the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. What you need to know before buying an air purifier

More people than ever before are considering room air filters and purifiers to protect themselves against COVID-19 indoors, a Philadelphia Sun staff report says, while questioning if these devices really make a difference. Air purifiers and filters can help reduce airborne contaminants, including viruses, in a home, office or other confined space. While an air purifier by itself is not enough to protect people from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when used along with the other best practices it recommends, operating an air purifier can be part of a plan to protect you…

Germicidal UV Lamps May Damage Cornea

Bacteria and viruses can be destroyed by UV light, Alanis Hayal at Brinkwire reports, and cautioning excessive use is harmful. Doctors from the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine stated in a paper published in the journal Ocular Immunology and Inflammation that some patients who used germicidal lamps to try to disinfect coronavirus experienced painful corneal inflammation, a disorder called photokeratitis. In an effort to remove coronavirus from homes and workplaces, these ultraviolet (UV) products, available to customers, were used. “During the height of the pandemic, we noticed an increased number of…

Ultraviolet radiation causes rare type of eye cancer

Ultraviolet radiation can cause a rare type of eye cancer, conjunctival melanoma, according to University of Manchester research funded by Cancer Research UK and others* and published** in Nature Communications, according to a report from The University of Manchester released yesterday. UV radiation is known to be the key environmental cause of melanoma of the skin, but its role in the development of rarer forms of melanoma in the eye was not known. This new study has revealed strikingly similar genetic changes in conjunctival melanoma to that of cutaneous (skin) melanoma caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The team behind today’s…

Germ killer to go: OSRAM announces the fight against viruses and bacteria with portable UV-C air purifiers

Stopping the spread of germs and viruses has become more important in the current pandemic-ridden world. UV-C light – the effect of which has been known for over a century – has been proven to be a key to clean air indoors. The invisible, ultraviolet light destroys viruses and bacteria with a reliability of 99.9 percent. OSRAM now brings the proven UV-C technology with two flexible products to mobile applications. ‘OSRAM has decades of experience in sterilization and disinfection using UV-C light,’ says Dr. Wilhelm Nehring, CEO of the Business Unit Digital at OSRAM. ‘This expertise from professional applications…

Food Manufacturer Using Healthe UV Equipment to Sanitize Air

Randy Shore at Vancouver Sun reports Nature’s Path—a food manufacturer based in British Columbia—has installed cutting-edge ultraviolet lighting and air-disinfection filters at its plants that promise to rid indoor air of the virus that causes COVID-19. All three plants—in Delta, Blaine, Wash. and Sussex, Wis.—have been equipped by Florida-based Healthe Inc. Proprietary downlights for general illumination employ “Far-UVC 222 nanometer light” to sanitize the air in break and lunch rooms where physical distancing is a challenge. They have also installed specialized “troffers” — ceiling-mounted circulators that draw air through carbon filters and treat it with the same wavelength of UV…

LiteSheet LED UV-C Disinfecting Cabinet Kills 99.95% of SARS-CoV-2 in 15 Minutes

This past fall, LEDs Magazine reports in its Company Newsfeed section, Dr. Nisha Duggal and her team of scientists at Virginia Tech tested the efficacy of the LiteSheet UV-C Disinfecting Cabinet against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that is the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic, on surfaces.  Virginia-based LiteSheet Solutions’ innovative LED UV-C disinfecting cabinet is designed to decontaminate potentially deadly bacteria and viruses, like the COVID19 virus.  The cabinet finds practical applications in disinfecting equipment used in offices, nursing homes, medical facilities, schools, universities, restaurants, hotels and other locations. “We tested the capacity of SARS-CoV-2 to infect cells after a…

UV Irradiation of Strawberries Saves Water

A team of researchers in Spain finds UV irradiation of strawberries is just as effective as rinsing them in chlorine-treated water, but may use less water because the wash water can be re-irradiated and reused. The research appears in “Inactivation of Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes and murine norovirus (MNV-1) on fresh strawberries by conventional and water-assisted ultraviolet light (UV-C)” published in the Apr. 2021 edition of Postharvest Biology and Technology.
