Current Understanding of Ultraviolet-C Decontamination of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to severe shortages of single-use N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) worn by health care workers and first responders, and ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation has been identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of the most promising methods for N95 FFR decontamination under crisis-capacity conditions.1 UV-C is already implemented for airborne pathogen inactivation and other applications in hospitals;2 however, UV-C decontamination of N95 FFRs involves additional considerations.
